HORNET SOCIAL JUSTICE WEEK 2022

Fullerton College Student Life and Leadership and Associated Students would like to welcome you to Social Justice Week (March 28 – April 1), a week-long opportunity to strengthen connections with the campus community and cultivate a culture of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and anti-racism. The week is meant to welcome and challenge the Hornet community as we come together in various learning activities, events, and dialogue through a social justice lens. We are excited to have Dr. Kevin Nadal, professor, psychologist, and activist as our keynote speaker.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: DR. KEVIN NADAL

Dr. Kevin Leo Yabut Nadal is a Distinguished Professor of Psychology at both John Jay College of Criminal Justice and the Graduate Center at the City University of New York. He received his doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University in New York City and is one of the leading researchers in understanding the impacts of microaggressions, or subtle forms of discrimination, on the mental and physical health of people of color; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people; and other marginalized groups.

We are joined by various faculty and staff associations who will share how they advocate for social justice and embed it into their work. *Attendees will be able to grab a Social Justice Week shirt (while supplies last)!

WELCOME TO THE POLITICAL SPHERE: A DISCUSSION ABOUT RESOURCES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND BARRIERS TO WOMEN PURSUING POLITICS 

The Fullerton College Chapter of Ignite–an organization for women and non-binary individuals pursuing politics–will be hosting a light-hearted and engaging discussion regarding women in the political sphere. Who are leaders you look up to? How can Fullerton College empower women in politics? How can we change or knock down barriers for women in this profession? These are all questions that will be discussed at Ignite’s event.

DO MEXICANS EXIST IN THE FUTURE?

Do Mexicans exist in the Future? This question might seem easy to answer for some, but to others this question is as philosophical as it is geo-political. Mexicans have never identified as “one” people, but have been forced to as a result of colonialism and capitalism. Join Professor Jose Zamora of the Ethnic Studies Department as he explores what it means to be Mexican: past, present, and future.

TRANS DAY OF VISIBILITY DIALOGUE WITH SYDNEY MAE DIAZ

Please welcome Sydney Mae Diaz, actor (Genera+ion, Ghostbusters: Afterlife) and musician (Anxioushum) who will be sharing his reflections on being publicly visible due to the nature of his work, but also the important small-scale steps it took to get comfortable within his trans identity. Diaz will be joined in conversation by Fullerton College’s LGBTQIA2S+ Professional Expert, Ariel Gentalen before an open Q+A session.

CLOSING SPEAKER: EBONÉ BELL

We conclude Social Justice Week with Eboné Bell, who serves as our final speaker of the week. Eboné is a business owner, speaker, and trailblazer who shines bright in the world of entrepreneurship, LGBTQ issues, media, and activism. As our closing speaker, Eboné is well known for her warm energy and transparency. She is not afraid to have tough conversations. She encourages students to discover how they show up in the world. Her humor makes her approachable to students on and off-stage. Her commitment to connection is what makes her a dynamic and unforgettable speaker.

This is a group social hour for anyone who identifies with the LGBTQIA2S+ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual/Ally, 2-Spirit, non-binary, and others who affiliate with the queer community). Discussion topics include gender, sexuality, pronouns, microaggressions, intersectionality, and many other topics related to the queer community. Bring your own questions to discuss with us!
